BALLS BALLS BALLS

Was at the gym the other day and saw some very pretty coverage on Graziano Cecchini's latest artwork in Rome.

More on Cecchini.
Three months ago Cecchini, a 54-year old unemployed painter, was said to be the culprit who dumped a bottle of red dye into Rome's Trevi Fountain turning the entire water blood red.

Media critic Gianluca Nicoletti described the gesture as a "dramatic representation of the decline of the country".

Cecchini says, "If it had been me, wink wink, I'd say that this had been a media-savvy operation in the face of a very gray society."

"We see the same thing," Cecchini said of the red fountain, "Rome that's still menstruating, Rome that . . . is still fertile."

Cecchini's latest, greatest and I think much more pretty:
BALLS! LOTS AND LOTS OF BALLS! Approximately 500,000 multi-coloured plastic balls down Rome’s famous Spanish Steps - causing insanity, mayhem, a whole bunch of tourists to wonder what the hell was going on, and several Italians to look up from their espressos and roll their eyes (Shape + Colour).

Apparently the significance of it all is in the Italian word for “balls” (”palle”) which can also mean “untruth”. The symbolism behind 500,000 “untruths” rolling through town is beautiful in it’s simplicity, noticeability, and ability to totally piss people off.

Detained by the police for “interrupting public services”, Cecchini said, ”This is an artistic operation which documents through art the problem that we have in Italy. They’re always telling us lies, both the Left and the Right.”
